Keeping Livestock & Equine Water Source, Units Clean

By Roland Stockwell

If you have horses or perhaps raise livestock, you know that keeping stables, pens and water sources clean and fresh is a huge part of keeping animals healthy. Using chemicals to achieve this state of cleanliness, however, is not only unnecessary, it can be unsafe. Fortunately, there are many chemical-free, safe products that you can use.

If your animals drink water from a stock tank, consider purchasing one of the Healthy Ponds products created specifically for stock tanks. The cleaner will keep a 300-gallon stock tank clean for up to 30 days, so basically you just need to add a new pack each month.

The Stock Tank Cleaner uses helpful bacteria to keep water clean and contains no harsh chemicals. It has been approved by veterinarians and is safe for humans, pets and all wildlife. The cleaner includes a dispenser and two bacteria packs. The company recommends that for the first use, you should empty and clean out your stock tank, then fill it with fresh water. Next, you simply toss in the dispenser and it will go to work. At the end of 30 days, just pull out the dispenser, refill it with a new pack and toss it back into the stock tank. You won't need to empty and clean out the tank each time you add a new bacteria pack, although it is still wise to clean out the tank periodically.

If your animals drink from a pond or lake on your property, you can ensure that the water is top quality by using the AquaSpherePro. This is a biodegradable sphere that you simply toss into your pond. The sphere, like the stock tank cleaner, contains a helpful mix of safe bacteria that work to eliminate slime, scum and organic build-up. This product also is veterinarian approved and safe for all animals, including fish, birds and horses. It also is safe for people, so if your family enjoys swimming in your pond, you can feel confident that your water is safe.

Your first step will be to calculate the size of your pond or lake to determine what size or combination of AquaSpheres will be right for you. For instance, if you have an 85,000-gallon pond, you could add two 50,000-gallon AquaSpheres to the water. This will ensure that you have the right amount, and don't worry about the excess. You cannot over-treat the water. Just remember to add new AquaSpheres every 30 days to maintain water quality.

If you have hog or dairy units, you can reduce sludge and build-up by using a combination of helpful products. For example, if you have a waste-storage unit that has a large amount of crusting, begin by using Activator Plus. This product, when mixed with water, will reduce the sludge and prevent crusting, as well as reducing odor and flies. This product is safe for all animals, as well. Once you have treated your unit with this product, it is wise to toss in an AgraSphere each month. This product will continue to reduce the odor and build-up, while preventing crusting. Each sphere lasts for 30 days and works around the clock to keep the unit safe and as clean as possible.
