Do You Need Interior Design Advice?

By Carl Gale

Interior design is something that can be applied by anyone these days. All you have to have is a little bit of knowledge in the subject and you should be well on your way towards having a good idea about how to fix up any home. Read on to learn more.

Use your own photos as artwork. As a cheaper and more personal way to adorn your walls, use photos that you've taken. Either have prints made and frame them or use one of the many photo-to-canvas providers to have your photo made into a gallery canvas. If you are more tech-savvy, you can alter your photos in software to make them look even more like artwork.

Start with a fresh coat of paint. Paint is inexpensive and can make a big change to a room in just a few hours. Go to your local home store and get swatches. Then, come home and imagine what each swatch would look like, and how it would blend with the furniture and other rooms in your home. Choose one and see how different your room looks!

Fix up a child's room from his point of view. It could be easily forgotten that children do not see the room the way you look at it. Ascertain that they can access everything easily. Look at it as your kid would and get rid of possible hazards.

When you are decorating your children's room, try to look at things from their perspective. Decor in their room should be practical and age-appropriate. If you have young children, get down and look at things at their eye level. This will help you decide how to make the most of the space in their room.

A fast way that you could do to update your interior is by focusing on accessories. Accent pieces and lighting fixtures can be traded out easily. Try out a few new pieces like new curtains or a few stylish tea towels. Even the simplest of changes can cause a dramatic change in your room.

Get creative. Even if you don't consider yourself a great artist, you can make a wonderful collection of art. Draw a symbol or an abstract piece on a piece of drawing paper. It doesn't have to be that big. Put it in a high quality frame. If you want really do something nice, create 3 or 4 drawings and frame them all together.

Use vinyl adhesive stickers to decorate a child's room. Because you may not want to redo your child's room each time they go through a phase (trains? dinosaurs? super heroes?), vinyl stickers are a great solution. Available in practically every design from words to numbers to athletes and more, they allow you to stick them semi-permanently to any wall, but easily remove them when your child finds a new passion.

A great tip for interior design is to layer your window treatments. This will give your room a more elegant look and feel. It also has the added benefit of giving you better control of the natural light in your room as one of your layers can be sheer.

When you're considering lighting for your room, try to use as much natural light as possible. Natural light can leave you in a much better mood than the light from a lamp. Utilize windows and skylights whenever possible. Not only will it improve your mood; it'll save you money on your electric bill.

As you can see, interior design can be fun, interesting and allow you to create the kind of home in which you will feel comfortable. Keep these tips in mind, do more research and look at interior design magazines to get a few ideas for your own interior design project.
